Use Windex

If the doors of perception were cleansed, Everything would be seen as it is, infinite.William Blake

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote that “reality is one hundred percent perception.” It’s true. We each have our own unique eye that views our world. Part of the art of relationship is sharing that singular worldview with others.

How do you know if you’re seeing clearly? The truest answer is that you don’t, you can’t.

I like to think of human beings as huge diamonds with millions of facets. If the one you’re looking through at any given moment is cloudy, you can always use Windex to change your perception. This works especially well during arguments.

If one of a pair has one perception, and the other of the pair has another one, doesn’t it make sense to try to see the other’s perspective? It sure makes for understanding, and understanding is a necessity in human relating.

The real cure, other than metaphorical Windex, is to bring curiosity to another perspective. That way you open yourself to education rather than remaining in prejudice.

Two people, no matter how well-suited, are going to disagree every once in a while. Having curiosity as a tool makes disagreement easier. And who knows, you might even learn something!
