Maintaining A Healthy Immune System
We have all learned about covering our mouths, washing our hands, and disinfecting surfaces to stave off a cold or the flu. There are many other things we can do to maintain a healthy immune system. Let’s talk about the Fundamental Lifestyle Principles:
Eating, Sleeping, Breathing, Moving, Pooping, and Thinking.
Eating: Eat regular meals with protein at every meal. As the weather gets colder, eat more warming foods such as soups and mildly steamed vegetables. Avoid foods that stress the system such as processed sugars and carbohydrates, alcohol, excessive caffeine, and artificial additives such as colors and sweeteners.
Sleeping: Make sure to get an adequate amount of sleep, at least 6-8 hours per day. Lack of proper sleep has been clearly linked to a decreased immune response.
Breathing: Learning and practicing abdominal breathing helps to decrease stress, improve bowel function, increase oxygenation, and center the mind. A daily practice of 5-10 minutes is strongly encouraged.
Moving: Exercise is vital to the circulation of lymph, it reduces stress, and it improves immune function. Moderate exercise of at least 30 minutes per day for 3-5 days each week has been clearly linked to improved immune function. Optimally at least half of these sessions involve practices like yoga, tai chi, and pilates that work and stretch the entire body to release muscular tension that has accumulated throughout the day.
Pooping: Optimal digestion and bowel function is important to maintain as the regular excretion of toxins. If you are not experiencing regular bowel function (at least 1 bowel movement per day) talk to one of your practitioners about ways to maintain good bowel function.
Thinking: Depression and “the blues” have been shown to decrease immune function, while laughing and smiling have been linked to a strengthened immune system. Laugh at least 5 times a day, have a positive attitude, make at least 2 different people smile. It will make you feel good!
